讲座题目：Traffic congestion in inner cities – a game theoretic analysis

讲座摘要：

The subject of the presentation is traffic congestion that is actually one of the central problems of inner cities. An inefficient use of limited public street space causes prohibitively high congestion costs. A simple game theoretic model is used to show that inner city traffic congestion can be seen as a stable Nash equilibrium in an n-person game with the actors being caught in a prisoner’s dilemma. Because of the stability of this inefficient situation there might be a need for the state to intervene in order to decrease congestion and minimize congestion costs. Possible instruments are intensely discussed in science and policy: a) the increase of street capacity, b) road pricing and c) the improvement of public transport. The impact of these instruments are analyzed in the presented simple game theoretic model and recommendations are given.
